“Prof. Dr. Yutong Lu is the Director of the System Software Laboratory, School of Computer Science, National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), Changsha, China. She is also a professor in the State Key Laboratory of High Performance Computing, China. She got her B.S, M.S, and Ph.D degrees from te NUDT. Her extensive research and development experience has spanned several generations of domestic supercomputers in China. During this period, Prof. Lu was the Director of Designer for the Tianhe (Note: Milky Way)-1A and Tianhe-2 (Note: It can perform 33 thousand trillion calculations per second (petaflops) which is twice as fast as the next one, #2 in the world). Her continue research interests include parallel operating systems (OS), high-speed communication, global file system, and advanced programming environment.

Designed by Dr. Yutong Lu, the system designer of multiple iterations of Tianhe supercomputers, the Tianhe-2A is an upgrade to the Tianhe-2, using novel architecture to work around the lack of Xeon Phi cores from trade restrictions (Note: The US government bans Intel from selling this kind of chips to China). Using this technique, they have managed to create a design that gives the computer the extra 45 petaflops it needs to reign at the top of the computing world.”
