Sugarloaf mountain.

When Katherine was here last week, we followed my father’s suggestion and headed up to see Sugarloaf Mountain. When I was a child, I would hear about folks going to this mountain and I thought it was hours and hours away. It turns out that it’s really close to the house and the leaves were turning. I love fall! My favorite season.

Midweek Update

I’ts been a tiring couple of weeks. Work has picked up quite a bit and there’s some pressure to move into the true production phase of our project. We’re interviewing some people, and I generally dislike the entire interview process. It’s way too much pressure to measure up to when I’m on the other end of it. It can be a pretty demoralizing process. I don’t like being on the receiving end of it, so I generally don’t like being on the giving end of it either.

Socially, I’ve picked up a new crowd of friends in the city. Looks like there’s a core contigent of Andrew, Christina, Ann, Stan and I. It’s pretty nice. We go salsa dancing together. Last night we played bridge at Christina’s. I must say that everyone there is a total foodie. So much so that I feel pretty inadequate, cause everytime I go over to someone’s house, there’s a 5 course brunch or homemade random desserts – yes, desserts, plural. Last night Christina made a chocolate cake and freakin’ sugar donut holes. Yeah, like home fried in a vat of oil. Andrew made some cinnamon scones. And this was a non-food focused night. Sigh.

Here’s an MIT related news bit. Those Wellesly chicks. 😛 jk.

For the love of Edda.

For Edda (who was sick this weekend and was such a trooper – dragged every which way we went this weekend), I decided that my big contribution this year was to help out with the Fairfax, VA stroll-a-thon and to organize the silent auction.

I met so many families and friends who donated and Katherine spent evenings helping me out with the bid sheets and the displays and Jeremy watched the kids and put them to bed by himself for a whole week after he’d taken care them all day and there were a bunch of great folks who helped – with the money collection and with general PR, it was really great. We raised over $5000 at the silent auction alone. Whew, I’m beat.

Leaving South Carolina

Since we are leaving South Carolina, we visited a lot of places as planned before leaving. We visited Charleston (SC), Myrtle Beach (SC), Outer Banks (NC) & Blue Ridge Parkway (SC & NC).
Yesterday, weather was very nice and we visited Clemson University. Too bad, it was their home coming football game. A lot of people and it was difficult to find a parking spot. Luckily, after lunch, originally we just wanted to drive around. But, acccidentally, we found a spot for parking very close to the main campus. So, we had a chance just to walk around.
While resting, we sat next to one of their Presidents – Mr. Cox. He served Clemson for 30 years and was credited to expand this agricultural university originally into a major school in the South East.
Mr. Clemson was a noted researcher and scenitist before he founded this university on land owned by his father-in-law and using his name. Smart guy in relationship and business too 🙂

Fundraising.

I have let more than half the month pass without mentioning RSAM, otherwise known as Rett Syndrome Awareness Month. Interesting it coincides with BCAM – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Everything is pink in the stores! Coolers, hammers, cream cheese are all pink this month for BCAM. Wow, if I could get even a pinch of the same interest in RSAM, it would be lovely – I guess would everything be purple? Hmmm…

Anyways, this whole week, I’ve given up my lunch time gym hour (I already feel the fat settling into areas previously dominated by muscles) to organize (and stress out about) the silent auction over at this weekend’s stroll-a-thon in Fairfax, VA. I was doing well with corporate sponsorships and asking for donations until I got hit with this “full-time employment” thing. Such a time sink, you know, making a living and making sure everyone has perks like health insurance. I still have grand plans to ask another 40 people while printing out brochures for the silent auctions. We’ll see how much I get done. Anyways, if you are reading and want to donate to a worthy cause, here’s the link. Be sure to put Fairfax, VA for program area and Edda in the comments area. Every penny counts!
